Experience the Wetlands

Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve is a 130-hectare site (325 acre) located on the un-dyked floodplain of the Vedder River.  Managed by the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve Society, the site is known for the breeding colony of Great Blue Herons as well as a wide variety of wildlife and vegetation. 

Site includes:

  • Beautiful Rotary Interpretive Centre

  • Observation tower

  • Bird blinds

  • Salmon spawning channels

  • 4 walking trails, covering about 9 km

  • Guide Trail for self guided walks on site

  • Wheelchair accessible building & trails

  • Gift Shop

  • Over 100 Great Blue Heron nests

Hours of Operation

There are no admission fees to walk the site or to visit the Rotary Interpretive Centre.   The site and building are open seven days a week and 364 days a year.  (Closed Dec 25th )

 

 Walking Trails and Site

7:00 am to dusk

Rotary Interpretive Centre

Open daily 10:00 am to 4:00 pm

 

Nov 1 until Jan 31  Open daily 11:00 am to 3:00 pm

NOTE:  On rare occasions, Rotary Interpretive Centre is closed due to extreme weather or volunteer staff having to cancel at the last minute.

Trail Restrictions

The Salwein Trail & the Heron Loop Trail are pedestrian only. 

Walkers with leashed dogs, cyclists and horses please use the centre trail and dyke trails.  Please always watch for pedestrians!

 

Volunteer Opportunities

 

The Rotary Interpretive Centre and surrounding area is managed and staffed by volunteers. Exciting volunteer opportunities are available as interpretive guides, interpretive centre hosts, and Board Directors.
