Cedar Bark Basketry with Brenda Crabtree!
Saturday, June 16,
2012 10 am to 4 pm.
This
hands-on workshop will be led by Brenda Crabtree and introduces you
to the traditional and contemporary techniques of weaving with red
and yellow inner cedar bark. A variety of weaving techniques are
introduced and you will complete a small cedar bark basket. Max 10
participants
Workshop fee $110 payable
on registration ( includes
materials)
All proceeds to the Great Blue
Heron Nature Reserve
The
workshop also includes:

Video on harvesting inner cedar bark

Discussion of materials, including harvesting, processing and
storage.

Demonstration of materials and tool use

Demonstration of styles, techniques and processes for weaving with
cedar
Brenda
Crabtree is the Aboriginal Program Manager at Emily Carr University
of Art + Design
in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada and has a Master of Arts in
Cultural Anthropology. She belongs to the Spuzzum Band and has both
Nlaka’pamux and Sto:lo ancestry. Her research focus includes
indigenization of curriculum and aboriginal epistemology. Her art
practice includes cedar bark weaving, drum making and beadwork.

Wildlife Explorers Each
week a different topic will be studied in a fun and engaging way
though activities, excursions and observation. Topics include:
habitat, pond dipping, bugs, wetland ecology, trees, mammals, frogs,
etc
Wildlife Art Each week a
different art project, including outdoor painting and sketching,
which are linked to the science topics
Dates: Tuesdays April 3rd
to May 8th (six weeks) Ages: age 5 to teen

1:30 - 2:30 Group 1 Wildlife
Art Group 2 Wildlife Explorers
Groups: We will break
into two smaller working groups, younger and older students
Cost: $135 per student
